AbstractSESSIONS ON TERRITORY is a series of public debates on the political economy of architecture and territory. The forthcoming series aims to understand the relationship between architects and civil servants.
Learning objectiveSESSIONS ON TERRITORY is a series of public debates exploring the intersection of architecture, territory, and political economy. The upcoming sessions will focus on the role of architecture—and architects—in the public sector, featuring practitioners engaged with or working within state institutions. These include city architects, planners, and urban activists dedicated to advancing the public interest in its broadest sense: the public good, public ownership, public space, and the public sphere. These vital categories face mounting challenges from the state, the market, technology, and a growing erosion of trust in social institutions. Through dialogue with invited speakers and researchers examining the relationship between spatial practices and the public sector, the program aims to define the enduring contributions architecture can make to the public.

103-0572-00LKey Concepts in Urban Planning Theory4 credits2GJ. Da Cruz Paulos, K. Hofer
AbstractThis course delves into foundational concepts and pivotal articles in planning theory, providing a comprehensive exploration of theoretical underpinnings. It emphasises critical reflection on integrating theory with existing planning practices and aligning planning processes with contemporary challenges.
Learning objectiveStudents will develop the ability to interpret, translate, and critically reflect on key concepts and foundational aspects of planning theory, often presented in abstract terms, and apply them to processes, cases, and contexts.

* Understand the existing landscape of planning theory research (e.g., ethics, advocacy, incrementalism, radical planning).
* Interpret conceptual and heuristic tools shaping planning research (e.g., knowledge, power, justice).
* Describe planning processes and instruments from theoretical, reflective, and ethical perspectives.
* Critically examine planning from the inside out, questioning the circumstances, cases, and conditions influencing it.
ContentThe course is structured around three key areas, each addressing fundamental aspects of planning theory and its application:

1. Foundations of planning theory
* Explore the evolution of key planning concepts and ideas.
* Examine the epistemic and ethical underpinnings of planning practices.
* Understand the diversity of theoretical approaches (e.g., advocacy, incrementalism, radical planning).

2. Processes in planning
* Analyse how planning theories translate into actionable processes.
* Investigate the nexus between governance and planning from a theoretical perspective
* Assess the concepts and theories used to implement participatory planning.

3. Contextual applications of planning theory
* Explore how contexts influence planning practices.
* Reflect on the adaptability of planning theories to specific cases and conditions.
* Examine the interplay between culture, environment, and socio-economic circumstances in shaping planning outcomes.
Lecture notesThe Syllabus will be shared during the first lecture. All course contents will be provided via Moodle.
